Education
The first school started work in Balvi in 1863. The first Commerce School in Latgale was established here in 1921, which was relocated to Rezekne in 1927. Balvi Town Gymnasium started to work in 1930. In four comprehensive schools: Balvi Town Town Gymnasium, Balvi Secondary School, Balvi Primary School and Balvi Handicraft Secondary School work 159 teachers and these schools have been attended by 1897 students in 2002/ 2003. It is possible to improve knowledge in accordance with interests in Balvi Art School, Balvi Music School, Balvi Youth and Children Sports School. There are Balvi part-time (evening secondary) studies, Secondary School, Balvi District Regional Computer Centre, Balvi District Interests Education Methodological Centre in Balvi. The adults can improve knowledge and get better qualification at different courses in Balvi Further Education and Human Resources Centre established in 2001, which has developed successful cooperation with Daugavpils University and Riga Technical University. There are three libraries in Balvi: the Children Library, Balvi District Central Library and the Branch of Latvian Library for Blind People.
